About Don

Don tends to engender resentment and ridicule on the groups he posts to regularly. Some are annoyed by the nature of his claims, but most just get tired of his repetitiveness and inability to let go of his little obsession. Here, we've gathered some of the shots people have taken at Don. These are all written by Bob Jones, one of the more respected regulars on soc.libraries.talk, since his tend to sum things up very well. To be balanced, the next section features things people have said in Don's defense.

This post is in response to a claim by Don that the BPL was defacing books. It was apparent to the library staff in the group that Don was referring to regular book-processing practices. Several people took the time to explain some things about processing books, including Bob Jones, who concluded his post with this comment.

I don't know what your occupation is, but I strongly suspect you would have a low threshold of tolerance for some busybody who kept harrassing you about what you do and how and why you do it. Please go feed the ducks on Boston Common and give the poor librarians a break, Don!

This post is in response to one of Don's rants about another BPL department, and his perceived treatment at their hands.

Well, Don, if you talk to the personnel department the same way you ramble and whine and run in circles in your newsgroup postings, it's no wonder they'd give you the bum's rush. Try reading "The Elements of Style" by Strubk & White, and "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. If you say "Pretty please with sugar on it" BPL might even let you borrow them.

We included a post by Don called "Librarian Tricks of the Trade" in the humor section, but not everyone would agree with us on that choice. That post generated one or two complaints. This post is in response to another poster's questioning of Don's intent.

If you go to Deja News and look at his long list of tirades against the Boston Public Library, I think you will conclude this latest one was not tongue-in-cheek. At first I thought he was a library employee, too, but eventually concluded he was a disgruntled patron with a lot of time on his hands. I don't even know if he lives in Boston and pays taxes to support BPL. He may be a suburbanite with no vested interest in the library.

This post is also in response to Don's "Librarian tricks of the trade" post.

Don:

You really need to develop new interests. You are so hung up on BPL you can't see straight. If you hassle them all the time it's no wonder you get less than excellent service. You recall the old saying about attracting more bees with honey that with vinegar? Librarians are people too, and they don't like being harrassed by curmudgeons. So accept some of the responsibility for your problems by looking in the mirror.

People often make suggestions, but Don rarely responds to any of them.

My advice to Mr. S.: If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Why not apply to be a volunteer at BPL? Or use your seemingly excessive spare time to go to library school, get an MLS, and go to work at BPL? Better yet, as you apparently do not live in the City of Boston and therefore do not support BPL with your property taxes, why don't you mind your own business, or at least pester your own city? BPL is not your problem.

The suggestion below is probably the best one ever directed to Don. One imagines, though, that the Boston Public Library might not take a shine to the idea.

I say we circulate a petition asking BPL to let Mr. Saklad work at a busy public service desk for a week. Let him tackle some tough reference questions, deal with irate patrons, handle the street people, the gang members, the mentally ill, the obnoxious self-appointed critics, etc. Then we'll see if he has a more well-rounded view of library service.

For the last word in this section, we'll leave you with this gem. For the record, though, Don has never talked about any conspiracy aside from the BPL conspiracy, as far as we know.

Don:

So just what is it you think they are hiding from you that affects your use of library materials and services? You may have valid concerns, but in your postings here you come off as (check all that apply):

Paranoid

Busybody

Subscriber to conspiracy theories regarding:

        Death of JFK

        Roswell incident

        Alien abductions

        What really happened at Chappaquiddick

Jilted boyfriend of pretty library school student circa 1963

Someone who needs an extended vacation far from Boston

Try this, Don. Go sit on the banks of Walden Pond for an afternoon, down by the site of Thoreau's house, where you can't see the building at the other end of the pond. Watch the water and the autumn leaves, let yourself unwind and focus on peaceful thoughts. Do not allow images of BPL to enter your mind. Take a nap. Read "Walden." Relax. Resolve to never let the internal politics of BPL upset you again...
